Housing

Living on your own for the first time can be confusing! Here's some help.

Terms you may need to know
A lease is a contract you agree to when renting, It can be verbal or written, which sets the rules for the place you're renting. If a lease is longer than one year then it must be written.
A Security deposit is money you provide for your landlord in case there are damages to the property while you're renting or you fail to pay rent. Your lease will usually include details about the security deposite. If you get your security deposite back after renting your landlord must return it within three days. If you do not get it back they must wrte out why you will not get it back. To avoid misunderstandings and dishonesty it is recommended that you document damage to your apartment/home with pictures before you move in. Your landlord must also account how the deposit will be spent whether its fixing damages or covering for rent. However, if you damage something in the house then you are responsible for fixing it.

Landlords
Your landlords job is to keep your home livable. Your lease may also define the landlords responsibilities around the home.
Your landlord can enter your house without permission in cases of emergencies or strange circumstances but for other reasons they have to provide a 24 hour written notice.
If you're moving and breaking lease then you need to tell your landlord. You may still have to pay for the time you aren't living in the house until the lease is up. If the lease is up then you should inform your landlord a month before you move but this may also be discussed in your lease.
